NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Bharat Aluminium Co. (BALCO), a unit of UK-based Vedanta Resources Plc, plans to import about 350,000 tonnes of alumina during 2007, a company official told Reuters on Tuesday.
The alumina would be used at one of the firm's two smelters in Korba town, in Chhattisgarh, which have an aluminium production capacity of 345,000 tonnes.
The official said the firm's total annual alumina requirement was 500,000 tonnes, but part of that would be met domestically.
He said BALCO was finalising the import of 200,000 tonnes from international suppliers, equivalent to six months' supply.
The remainder would be agreed later in the year.
London-listed Vedanta has aluminium, zinc, copper, silver and lead operations in India, Australia and Zambia.
