Norwegian energy and aluminum company Norks Hydro AHA is considering producing aluminum in Angola as part of its strategy to seek out countries with future favorable conditions for energy supply, the company said Friday.
Hydro and the Angolan government were considering cooperation on a 600,000-metric-ton primary aluminum smelter and a hydropower facility with a capacity of 1.634 megawatts, the company said in a statement.
"So far, no decision has been made concerning Hydro's share of ownership if such a development in Angola were to be realized," Hydro said.
Hydro, the world's fourth largest aluminum producer, has been present in Angola for the past 15 years in the oil and gas sector.
The company has a joint venture project in Qatar to build a primary aluminum smelter with a capacity of 585,000 tons that could be expanded to around 1.2 million tons.
