Negotiators for the United Steelworkers union and Rexam, the world's largest aluminum can maker, continued to meet behind closed doors in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Tuesday afternoon, with the company expressing "hope and confidence" that a new labor deal will be forthcoming.
"We're very hopeful and confident that we'll reach an agreement and get a favorable vote (from the union) very soon," Rexam spokesman Greg Brooke told Platts. USW spokesman Gerald Dickey would only confirm the two sides were meeting for a second straight day. But he said he did not know what was happening at the bargaining table.
Monday's face-to-face discussions were the first since union workers at nine Rexam plants in the US overwhelmingly rejected a tentative 5-year agreement in early March. It initially was thought this week's talks would take place on Monday and Tuesday only. However, Brooke said, "The groups are going to talk until a deal is done."
The negotiations affect more than 1,000 hourly workers who continue to be covered by terms of a three-year contract that expired February 24. Plant locations affected by the negotiations include Chicago, Illinois; Phoenix, Arizona; Birmingham, Alabama; St. Paul, Minnesota; Whitehouse, Ohio; Chatsworth, California; Bishopville, South Carolina; and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
