Glencore International AG, the world`s biggest commodity supplier, announced that it will restart a potline at its partially-idled Columbia Falls smelter.
The smelter in Montana, which has an annual capacity of 168,000 t, is owned and operated by the Swiss-based Glencore which began reducing production in 2000 due to rising electricity costs before keeping the plant on care-and-maintainance.
Production of aluminium in the US has fallen 38% since 2000 to 2.28 Mt in 2006, according to the Arlington, Virginia-based Aluminum Association, but a 23% rise in aluminium prices to US$2,805/t at the end of the year is contributing to more facilities coming online.
Glencore, a privately-held company owned by its management and employees, is based in Baar, Switzerland and employs over 50,000 people in 23 plants in 14 countries through its industrial operations.
