According to statistics, China, the top primary aluminum producer in the world, produced 3.32 million tons of primary aluminum in May, sliding by 0.8% compared to the previous month while increasing by 11.3% year on year.
The month-on-month decrease was due to electricity curtailment measures in the main producing area Yunnan Province, suffering severe drought and thereby temporarily suspending some smelting capacity.
Up to now, the impacted annual aluminum smelting capacity in Yunnan has reached 750,000 tons. Although electricity restrictions may be canceled at the end of June, smelters may not start to speed up their production until August due to logistics restrictions.
