Vietnam imposed anti-dumping duties on aluminum extrusion and bar product imports from China on Wednesday, a Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade official said.
The duties of 2.46%-35.58% were levied on extrusion and bar imports from China. The measure is temporary and will last 120 days.
The ministry launched an investigation in January following requests from domestic companies affected by imports from China. The probe, following World Trade Organization rules, determined domestic companies were negatively affected by the imports from China, the ministry web site said.
The ministry said Vietnam's imports of aluminum extrusions and bars were 62,000 mt in 2018, doubling from 2017.
A local extruder with an output of around 10,000 mt/year told S&P Global Platts the industry welcomed the decision as imports from China were competitive.
Vietnam, however, does not have aluminum sheet processing plants, and would continue to rely on supplies from China and other countries for beverage can sheets, the extruder added.
The Vietnamese ministry notice also said that two weeks ago, the US government had determined some US extrusion imports from Vietnam were Chinese products circumventing US anti-dumping duties imposed on aluminum imports from China.
