The US Commerce Department said Wednesday it has opened an investigation into alleged dumping of aluminium parts known as extrusions by China in a move that could raise trade tensions between the two countries.
The department said imports of aluminium extrusions from China increased 90 percent from 2007 to 2009, allegedly due to subsidies estimated at 32.5 percent to 33.3 percent. The Chinese imports were valued at $514 million (R3.86 billion).
"The US International Trade Commission (ITC) is scheduled to make its preliminary injury determination on or about May 17, 2010,” the department said in a statement.
"If the ITC determines that there is a reasonable indication that imports from China are materially injuring, or threatening material injury to, the domestic industry, the investigations will continue,” it said.
