Production of alumina at the Alunorte refinery in Brazil slipped 13.2% to 978,000t in Q1 2007 from the record 1,127,000t produced in the preceding quarter (Q4 2006), according to Brazil's CVRD, which holds a majority stake in the joint venture plant.
"Various problems adversely affected production performance at the Alunorte plant: a shipping accident restricted navigation in the Trombetas River and the supply of bauxite from MRN, a power outage at the refinery for some hours, while there was also the delay in the start-up of operations at the Paragominas (bauxite) mine," CVRD said.
"These problems were of a transitory nature and production is proceeding normally in 2Q07," it added.
