Henderson, Kentucky (Platts):The US Environmental Protection Agency is proposing a fine in excess of $100,000 against Del's Metal, whose secondary aluminum production plant in Rock Island, Illinois, is accused of clean air violations.
EPA's Region 5 office in Chicago also reached an agreement with Allcast that calls for a $37,500 fine for alleged air quality violations at the company's secondary aluminum production plant in Allenton, Wisconsin.
In the Del's Metal case, the agency accuses the company of failing to test its sweat furnace emissions for dioxins and furans or to install an afterburner to destroy the harmful substances. EPA contends Del's Metal did not comply with planning, notification and record-keeping requirements.
Del's Metal has until mid-November to respond to the EPA complaint and request a hearing. EPA did not indicate when the alleged violations occurred.
According to EPA, its agreement with Allcast resolves allegations that the company melted coated aluminum returned by its customers in at least one of its furnaces without complying with regulations designed to control hazardous emissions of dioxins and furans.
The alleged violations occurred between March 2003 and September 2004.
Del's Metal and Allcast officials could not be reached for comment Monday.
