Global mining company Rio Tinto reported that its bauxite production totaled 25.6 million tons in the first half of 2023, falling by 8% compared to the same period a year ago.
The decrease was mainly due to increased rainfall at its Weipa operations, resulting in restricted access to the mine and a longer distance for the shipment. Besides, bauxite output at Weipa and Gove operations was also affected by equipment downtime.
In the first half of the year, the company’s alumina production kept stable at 3.7 million tons due to steady operations at the Vaudreuil and Yarwun refineries.
Meanwhile, Rio Tinto’s aluminum production was up by 9% year on year to 1.6 million tons, supported by the increasing output at the Kitimat smelter.
