Canadian producer Alcan announced it will invest $130m in a new turbine at its Shipshaw power generation plant in the Saguenay region of Quebec.
The new turbine will eventually replace an older, less-efficient machine. This project represents an investment of approximately US$130 million and is part of a broader $1.8 billion commitment to the region announced late last year.
"The new, 225 megawatt turbine will allow us to use our existing water resources more efficiently and to supply additional backup peaking capacity to Hydro-Québec, as agreed in our December commitment with the provincial government," the company said.
A key part of that investment package is the $550m earmarked for a 60,000tpy pilot aluminium smelter using the company’s latest-series AP50 technology. The plant will be located at the Jonquiere complex. Due in 2010 it is part of a bigger 450,000tpy planned investment in smelter capacity in the state.
