Alcan Inc. (AL) will "carefully analyze" the results of last Saturday's public consultation in the Icelandic community of Hafnarfjordur, which saw 50.3% of the citizens vote against a plan that included the expansion of Alcan's ISAL aluminum smelter.
Alcan said it will carefully review all available options, but it didn't elaborate.
It noted that the smelter employs about 450 people and has a current capacity of 180,000 metric tons a year. The planned expansion would raise the total capacity to 460,000 tons a year.
Montreal-based Alcan is a global materials company.
Its stock is down 0.5% in New York trading at $51.96.
