Canadian producer Alcan reported a drop in sales volumes in the third quarter of this year due to the closure of the Steg smelter in Switzerland and an outage at the ISAL smelter in Iceland.
Total volumes fell by 61,000t year-on-year and by 55,000tpy from the second quarter to 1.051 million tonnes. Within that figure ingot sales volumes fell by 73,000t year-on-year and 37,000t quarter-on-quarter.
The company had previously announced the closure of the 44,000tpy Swiss smelter by the end of Q2 2006, while ISAL lost one 70,000tpy potline in June due to a transformer failure. It was restarted in September.
