Persian Gulf producer Aluminium Bahrain (ALBA) has raised its salary offer on a new labour contract, averting a threat of strike action by the company’s trade union, according to local media reports.
As we reported last week, the company (and the country) experienced its first labour unrest in decades last week in the form of a token one-hour strike by all non-critical workers to protest the company’s pay offer. The union was flexing its muscles after changes in the tough national labour laws.
ALBA wasted no time in lifting its offer to an average 20% wage increase from 15% to head off threats of more action, including a complete walk-out.
The company commissioned in Q2 an expansion to 810,000tpy but actual production this year is forecast to comfortably exceed that level at around 840,000t.
