Rio Tinto has started constructing the expansion of the billet casting center at its Alma, Quebec smelter. With a total investment of C$240 million, the casting capacity of low-carbon, high-value aluminum billets will be raised by 202,000 tons.
The expansion project will introduce new advanced equipment such as furnaces, a casting pit, coolers, handling, inspection, and sawing and packaging systems. The project was expected to be commissioned in the first half of 2025.
This investment was aimed to boost Rio Tinto's aluminum production from renewable hydroelectric power and enable the company to meet potentially growing demand from North American extruders.
