BHP Billiton, the world’s biggest miner, is bringing key trading operations to the UK, a move seen as a vote of confidence in London’s position as a global centre for the natural resources industry.

The FTSE 100 miner is moving 70 jobs to London as it relocates its marketing operations from The Hague. BHP’s marketers are responsible for selling the commodities its mines produce to its customers.
BHP said the move, which will swell its London workforce to 250, represented an opportunity to consolidate its presence here and access the UK’s resource industry and trading talent.
Andrew Mackenzie, BHP’s senior executive in London, said: “The creation of the new hub in London reflects BHP Billiton’s long-term commitment to the capital and the UK’s strength in both the financial and natural resources industries.”
The new office will look after marketing in Europe. and also aluminium marketing on a global level.
Nick Baird, chief executive of UK Trade & Investment, welcomed the news. “This decision is a reflection of the many advantages London has as a place to do business,” he said.
