Plans are progressing for USD 30 million aluminum products manufacturing facility near Newcastle, at a time when the Hunter's aluminum sector is reeling from job losses.
Bahrain based company Midal Cables International wants to build the facility with an Australian-based partner next to the Tomago aluminum smelter, near Newcastle. It will use molten aluminum from the smelter to make rods, wire and conductors. Plans for the facility are now on public display and New South Wales Planning is seeking comment over the next month.
Mr Mark Rukin vice chairman of Midal said that there will be hundreds of jobs. We hope there to be 250 jobs created immediately and increased in the near future. Tomago have been fantastic in arranging the venture to go next door so it can get a special delivery of wet metal which is going to save costs.”
He said that "It is going to make it very competitive, which means we'll be here for a long time and the Hunter will enjoy the outcomes from the factory. That would be welcome relief for the Hunter's aluminum sector which was stung when the Tomago and Hydro aluminum smelters recently announced the loss of 250 jobs.”
