Anglo, BHP, Harmony and Sanlam May Be Active in Early Johannesburg Trading

Bloomberg Jan 25--The following is a list of companies whose shares may have unusual price changes in South Africa. Stock symbols are in parentheses after company names and prices are from the last close.


South Africa’s FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index lost 270.95, or 0.8 percent, to 31,869.06 at the close in Johannesburg.


African Bank Investments Ltd. (ABL SJ): The company that owns the country’s largest provider of unsecured loans holds a shareholders’ meeting. The stock rose 60 cents, or 1.6 percent, to 38 rand.


BHP Billiton Plc (BIL SJ): The world’s largest mining company together with partners Anglo American Plc (AGL SJ) and Xstrata Plc will hold wage talks with workers today to avert a possible vote to strike at the companies’ Colombian coal mine, a union leader said. The National Union of Coal Industry Workers at the Cerrejon mine will announce results of the workers’ vote on Jan. 27, said Igor Diaz, the group’s president. A walkout may begin as soon as Jan. 30, he said yesterday by telephone from the city of Barranquilla in northern Colombia. BHP Billiton decreased 3.65 rand, or 1.3 percent, to 270.35 rand. Anglo retreated 4 rand, or 1.1 percent, to 348.50 rand.


Freeworld Coatings Ltd. (FWD SJ): The paint producer said it raised competition-related concerns with antitrust authorities regarding Kansai Paint Co. Ltd.’s offer for the company. The stock advanced 5 cents, or 0.4 percent, to 11.55 rand.


Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HAR SJ): Africa’s third-largest producer of the metal said gold output at its Hidden Valley mine in Papua New Guinea rose 23 percent in the quarter through December from the quarter earlier. Harmony fell 1.20 rand, or 1.5 percent, to 77.40 rand.


Micromega Holdings Ltd. (MMG SJ): The investment company with interests ranging from lubrication equipment to financial services said it has entered into undisclosed negotiations that may affect its share price, if successfully concluded. The share was unchanged at 1.99 rand.


Sanlam Ltd. (SLM SJ): South Africa’s second-biggest insurer said it had paid a total 587 million rand ($84 million) in full and final settlement of claims lodged by the Topmed and Selfmed health-insurance providers. Sanlam lost 5 cents, or 0.2 percent, to 27.65 rand.


Shares or American depositary receipts of the following South African companies closed as follows:


Anglo American Plc (AAUKY US) added 1.4 percent to $25.01. AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (AU US) fell 0.2 percent to $44.36. BHP Billiton Ltd. (BBL US) gained 2.5 percent to $78.24. DRDGold Ltd. (DROOY US) rose 1.8 percent to $4.59. Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI US) retreated 1 percent to $16.21. Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HMY US) slipped 0.9 percent to $10.87. Impala Platinum Holdings (IMPUY US) rose 0.5 percent to $31.05. Sappi Ltd. (SPP US) declined 0.8 percent to $5.03. Sasol Ltd. (SSL US) gained 1 percent 51.65 rand.
