BHP Billiton Ltd. Monday said a strike at the Hotazel manganese mines of its Samancor Manganese has been called off after the company offered to explore alternative transportation solutions for workers, and a series of discussions were held between Hotazel management and the National Union of Mineworkers.
BHP Billiton said that during the discussions, both parties agreed the safety of employees, Hotazel town residents and children is a priority that can't be compromised.
The company will introduce a new shuttle bus service in which small buses will pick up employees at designated bus stops to be agreed with NUM. This will obviate the need for large buses to travel through the town - the safety risk which initially caused the company to use centralized pickup points.
The company will also erect bus shelters at the agreed bus stops to provide employees protection against the elements.
"This is a win-win outcome as it addresses both the employees' need for collection points closer to their homes and our absolute commitment to the safety of our people and the community," said Peter Beaven, BHP Billiton President: Manganese.
