Aluminum Corp of China Ltd (Chalco) said it will sign an agreement today with indigenous Australians prior to a planned 2.4 bln usd bauxite mining project in the northeastern state of Queensland, the Financial Times reported, citing a Chalco spokesperson.
China's largest aluminum smelter and alumina refiner has been in prolonged negotiations with aboriginal groups in the Aurukun region in northern Queensland to work out ownership and land-rights details for the project, the report said.
China has been lobbying the Australian and Queensland governments on behalf of state-owned Chalco, which is seeking financial backing for infrastructure and help in the talks with the traditional landowners.
Bauxite is a primary material used in the production of finished aluminum.
