April 23 -- Alcan Inc., the world's second- biggest aluminum producer, said one contract worker was killed and another injured in an accident at its Gove alumina plant in Australia.
"Alcan is investigating the accident in conjunction with police and other regulatory authorities," the Montreal-based company said in an e-mailed statement. The accident occurred at the plant's fuel storage area, the company said.
Alcan is spending $2.3 billion on expanding the Gove refinery, located in Australia's Northern Territory. The cost has exceeded an original budget of $1.5 billion because of labor shortages, bad weather and currency changes.
