UAE - 2007 March 25 -Australia's Worley Parsons and Italy's Technip submitted bids on 18 March for Abu Dhabi's first aluminium smelter to be built at Taweelah.

The contract covers engineering, procurement and construction management services for the smelter and is due to be awarded by mid-April. A similar package for the power plant is being tendered separately.

The US' Fluor Corporation is understood to have declined to bid despite receiving an invitation from developer Emirates Aluminium (Emal), a joint venture of Dubai Aluminium Company and Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Development Company.

The $8,000 million Taweelah smelter will be implemented in two phases, with the $5,000 million phase 1 due to be completed in 2010. The scheme is one of two new grassroots smelters planned in Abu Dhabi, aimed at meeting a projected 10 per cent annual increase in global aluminium demand. It will have initial capacity of 700,000 tonnes a year.

A 25 year-plus gas supply agreement with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) for the smelter is due to be signed by the end of March.

Studies are under way in western Abu Dhabi for a second aluminium complex, which is being developed by a joint venture of government-owned General Holding Company and Australia's Comalco Aluminium.
