Resources giant BHP Billiton reported on Tuesday that its aluminium production for the quarter ended September 30 was at an all-time record, excluding Valesul in Brazil.
The company's production report for the quarter highlighted that its Mozal and Bayside operations achieved quarterly production records, and Hillside's production equalled the previous record results, attained in the December 2005 and June 2006 quarters.
BHP Billiton produced 337 000 t of aluminium during the September quarter, which was a 1% improvement on the previous year's corresponding period.
However, overall production of the silver metal was down by 2% in the third quarter, compared to production for the four months ended June 30.
The world's largest diversified miner had expansion ambitions for Mozal and Hillside, dubbed Mozal three and Hillside three plus, but would only pursue them once confident of long-term, secure and economic power supply, which BHP Billiton has called a continuing endeavour.
Mozal three would add a third complete potline to the existing two and Hillside three plus would add half a potline to the existing two-and-a-half potlines.
One potline uses some 450 MW of electricity, and half a potline at Hillside would need half of that, so some 650 MW to 700 MW in total would be needed for the two proposed expansions.
